In Italian language the matching word for prickly pear is “Fico” which means also a person with a beautiful aspect. So, for this editorial, we have choosen the name “The land of prickly pear” not only because they are a typical Sicilian fruit, but also because Sicily is a land where travelers leave a piece of their soul and, above all, where “the beautiful” is in the smiles and in the faces of the people, in every path, in every corner!

The most stunning photos will be posted on our facebook page and may be used for marketing and communication campaigns aimed at promoting the territory.

Caucana is a little seaside town which is located near the most beautiful places of the south east coast of Sicily. It was built as a refuge for the survivors of the destruction of Kamarina (a Greek city founded by the Syracusans in 598.BC and destroyed several times: first by the Punic-Carthaginians in 403.BC, then by the Romans in 258.BC and at last by the Arabs in 827.) and it was enhanced by the Romans, during the imperial era.

Sometimes, the ruins of an ancient city hide a lot of stories that even the nefarious actions of man haven’t been able to erase. Caucana,  built around the IV – VII century, at the beginig was only a small cluster of villages. During 60’s, a lot of people from the surrounding municipalities built there their houses for summer holidays but, despite this, Caucana has maintained its fascinating.
